Operation of a Nd:YAG laser with a passive laser shutter of LiF with F2(-) color centers

Lasing with an Nd:YAG laser with a passive emitting laser shutter made from LiF with F2(-) color centers was achieved at 1111.2, 1115.95, and 1122.5-nm lines. The experimental instrumentation comprised a shutter with a contrast of 38 at 1064 nm, a plane-parallel resonator with mirrors of 100 and 60-percent reflectances, and an ISP-2500 pumping flashlamp. Experimental results show that the laser shutter acts as a selective in-resonator amplifier and tends to reduce the threshold for lasing on weak transitions in Nd(3+). In addition, it is possible to expand the range over which neodymium garnet lasers can be tuned in the visible and near-UV regions of the spectrum.
