Development of cryostabilized Nb/sub 3/Sn-Cu superconducting wire using the in situ process

Small improvements in the critical current density values of in situ processed Cu-Nb/sub 3/Sn wire are obtained by utilizing intermediate annealing of the Cu-Nb alloy during the mechanical reduction step. These improvements have two possible explanations: 1) that coarsening during the heat treatment might reduce the relative number of small Nb filaments that would have coarsened in the Sn diffusion step and thereby not contributed effectively to the critical current density, and 2) that impurity elements, such as Y, form precipitates during the heat treatment which are helpful in pinning Nb/sub 3/Sn grain boundaries and thereby reducing the grain size. For large-scale production of wire using multi-die drawing machines, where intermediate annealing is necessary for the preservation of zero breakage, it can also be used, consequently, under some control, to simultaneously enhance superconducting values. A method has also been developed to prepare a crystostabilized wire from in situ material using a rolling-extrusion combination. Its specifications and advantages are given.
