Primordial helium production by pregalactic accreting black holes

The possibility that the observed cosmic helium abundance might have been produced by accretion onto pregalactic black holes is examined. It is shown that the fraction of material processed around accreting black holes could be large enough to generate the observed helium abundance, and that the accretion rate could allow three types of accretion, namely radiation-supported torus, thin disk, and ion-supported torus. Significant hydrogen burning could occur in the accretion region. A plausible scenario for the production of helium, deuterium, lithium, and possibly the initial metal enrichment of galaxies in the accretion region around the black holes is proposed. 51 references.
