A new type of narrow-gap welding process has been developed and applied to the fabrication of components requiring a high standard of quality, such as those for thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, and chemical plants. The high usability of narrow-gap welding, the high reliability of weld joints made by this welding process, and its improved economical effectiveness have been proved through practical application. It can be said that narrow-gap welding will probably supersede submerged arc welding and electroslag welding in making almost all of the butt joints in thick materials in the not-too-distant future.
