The use of oxygenates, primarily alcohols and ethers, in gasoline blends has been prompted by the legal requirements to reduce lead usage in gasoline and the desire to supplement domestic unleaded gasoline, thus reducing the dependency on foreign crude. The advantages of oxygenates from a refiner's viewpoint relate primarily to octane quality. Utilizing oxygenates may enable refiners to satisfy pool octane requirements at lower cost. This paper describes the process leading to selection of oxygenates as octane improvers and/or gasoline supplements. Also, the quality features of oxygenates are compared, along with relative economic values of various candidates.
