As vessels begin laying hard pipe in the 1500-3000 ft water depth range, modifications in vessel configuration, equipment and techniques will be needed to successfully cope with the forces involved. Operations in water depths beyond 3000 ft will probably require major alterations to conventional vessels or an entirely different type of pipelay vessel. Pipelaying operations using reel-type vessels, which would require less modification, will probably increase appreciably in deep water. The vessel modifications for sub-3000 ft pipelaying include a longer and stronger stinger to withstand greater forces, thrusters combined with spread-anchoring to speed up repositioning and handle rough weather, precise repositioning and winching procedures to deal with the high pipe stresses, enhanced tensioning capabilities, and the addition of arrestors to prevent the propagation of pipe collapse along lengthy spans.
