The authors study the conditions of transmission of energy of excitation from UO/sup 2 +//sub 2/ to Eu/sup 3 +/ in solutions of phosphoric acid. They determine rate constants of quenching k /SUB q/ and transmission of energy of excitation from uranyl to europium k/sub 2/. They find that the values of k /SUB q/ and k/sub 2/, as well as the intensity ratios of the transitions /sup 5/D/sub 0/-/sup 7/F/sub 2/ and /sup 5/D/sub 0/-/sup 7/F/sub 2/ in the spectrum of Eu/sup 3 +/, do not depend on the uranium concentration. This, they argue, suggests that the transmission of energy of excitation from uranyl to europium does not involve the formation of mixed polynuclear complexes containing europium and uranium. They demonstrate the possibility of determining uranium in solution, using sensitized fluorescence of europium.
