Nuclear waste: the Niagara Mohawk radioactive waste incinerator

Journal Article · · Environment; (United States)
The Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation proposes to incinerate radioactive wastes inside a nuclear power plant on Lake Ontario. Recent contamination problems at burial trenches has closed all but one of the sites used since 1969. Designed by Newport News Industrial Corporation, the concept is waiting for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to make a safety review and release its report for other utilities to reference. The design is unique in burning solid waste and calcining liquids in a single container. Waste products will consist of radioactive ashes that will be combined with cement in metal drums and radioactive particles and gases that will go up the stack, which will use scrubbers, cyclones, and filters to contain most radioactivity. Local public opinion is negative because there will be no prior testing of the equpiment, a final storage place for the drums is not settled, and skepticism over stack-cleaning equipment. NRC staff also questions the concept and may hold a public technical meeting to discuss worker safety, the risk of explosion, and other concerns.
