Superconductivity of yttrium sesquicarbide synthesized at high pressures
Superconducting (T/sub c/ from 4.5 to 12.6 /sup 0/K) yttrium sesquicarbide with the bcc structure of the Pu/sub 2/C/sub 3/ type was synthesized at high pressures (30--90 kbar) and high temperatures (1100--1700 /sup 0/C). Superconducting samples were prepared from charges of different compositions and the lattice parameter of the cubic phase varied from 8.190 to 8.250 A. A superconducting phase was also prepared easily under the same conditions from yttrium carbides of unknown structure, which were made by arc melting. The initial parts of the curves representing the critical magnetic fields were determined and these were used to extrapolate the critical magnetic field to 0 /sup 0/K. The maximum critical field was 14 T. Doping of yttrium carbide with some transition metals increased the critical temperature to 15 /sup 0/K and the critical field to 16 T.
