Coriolis coupling in the rotational bands of deformed odd-odd nuclei

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. C; (United States)
Evidence is presented for the existence of odd-even staggering in/ital K//sup /minus// rotational bands (with /ital K//gt/0) of odd-odd nuclei in therare-earth and actinide regions. Coriolis-coupling calculations have beencarried out for rotational bands in /sup 168/Tm,/sup 176/Lu, /sup 182/Ta, and /sup 182/Re.With these calculations, we are able to reproduce the odd-even staggeringobserved in these nuclei. In particular, the unusually strong staggeringobserved in the /ital K/=2/sup +/ and 4/sup /minus// bands of/sup 182/Re can be understood. Unusual features in the wavefunctions of some bands reflect the importance of couplings due to terms otherthan Coriolis in the Hamiltonian.
