Parts per billion (ppb) levels of the atmospheric pollutant peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN, CH/sub 3/C(O)OONO/sub 2/) are synthesized in a portable photochemical flow reactor from irradiated mixtures of acetaldehyde, chlorine, and nitrogen dioxide in air. Direct, on-site calibration of PAN analyzers (e.g., electron capture gas chromatographs) can thus be performed in the range 2-400 ppb. The constant PAN output of the generator is quantitated by ion chromatography following alkaline hydrolysis of PAN to acetate in impingers, whose collection efficiency for PAN and potential interferents has been established. Generator output stability, PAN output as a function of temperature, and effect of matrix air humidity have also been characterized. 29 references, 3 tables, 1 figure.
