The preparation and characterization of trans-(Ru/sup VI/(bpy)/sub 2/O/sub 2/)/sup 2 +/ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) are described. The observed high E/sub f//sup 0/ value (1.25 V vs. NHE) for the trans-(Ru/sup VI/(bpy)/sub 2/O)/sub 2//sup 2 +//trans-(Ru/sup IV/(bpy)/sub 2/O(OH/sub 2/))/sup 2 +/ couple indicates that trans-(Ru/sup VI/(bpy)/sub 2/O/sub 2/)/sup 2 +/ is potentially useful for the photocatalytic splitting of water to oxygen. 10 references, 5 figures.
