Pulse radiolysis of Cr(CO){sub 6} and W(CO){sub 6} in alkane solution is described. The first reaction is identified as electron capture and yields the transients Cr(CO){sub 5}{sup {sm bullet}{minus}} ({lambda}{sub max} = 720 nm). Formation rates of Cr(CO){sub 5}S and W(CO){sub 5}S are measured and the main mechanism is identified as geminate reaction between the anion formed and a cation of the solvent. Behavior in the presence and absence of electron scavengers is described as well. The absorption spectrum of Cr(CO){sub 5}{sup {sm bullet}{minus}} in ethanol is also recorded ({lambda}{sub max} > 1,000 nm).
