Subpicogram detection limits are obtained for many aminosubstituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (amino-PAH) in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence detection. Detection limits are typically 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower than those that can be achieved in the same chromatographic system using fluorescence detection. The high selectivity of the chemiluminescence detection for amino-PAH allows these compounds to be determined in complex matrices without complete chromatographic separation. The HPLC/chemiluminescence method is applied to the detection of amino-PAH in samples of shale oil, coal oil, and coal gasifier tar and the results are compared with fused silica capillary column gas chromatography coupled with various means of detection, including mass spectrometry. 32 references, 9 figures, 4 tables.
