Estimates carried out by Stakhanov and Fiks (Pis'ma Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 7, 1255 (1981) and Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 53, 836 (1983) (Sov. Tech. Phys. Lett. 7, 537 (1981); Sov. Phys. Tech. Phys. 28, 535 (1983)) indicate that the operating conditions in plasma devices (tokamaks, stellarators, etc.) can be controlled by changing the temperature of the first wall, in which hydrogen or its isotopes are dissolved, in order to desorb the gas from the walls to produce an absorbing atmosphere in a closed chamber. This process is examined from a rigorous mathematical standpoint. The principal difficulties are partly due to the nonlinearity of the boundary conditions and partly to the need to treat the changes in the gas pressure inside the chamber during absorption or desorption. The time dependence of the gas pressure cannot be specified a priori but must be found by solving the equations. Analytical expressions for the limiting behavior are derived and analyzed, and the results of numerical calculations are presented.
