The cost of owning a transformer is minimized when the initial cost and all annual operating costs (both demand and energy components) are combined over its life cycle and compared on the basis of present-worth of annual costs. Allegheny Power Service Corp. purchased 21,000 distribution transformers in 1978, with losses that are substantially less than those associated with the lowest-first-cost transformer combination. The anticipated saving is equivalent to a 42.3% pretax return on incremental invested capital.
