Title: Fermentation of wheat straw hemicelluloses to ethanol by Pachysolen tannophilus

Conference · · Biotechnol. Bioeng. Symp.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6010074

Wheat straw (WS) was subjected to autohydrolysis (165/sup 0/C) prior to acid hydrolysis of the xylans to yield liquor xylan solids. The crude xylan hydrolysates were tested as substrates for ethanol production by Pachysolen tannophilus. Ethanol fermentation of crude xylan hydrolysates by P. tannophilus was obtained with either ethanol- or ether-extracted material. Ethanol-extracted liquor solids yielded 10 g/L ethanol from 43 g/L xylose, whereas ether-extracted hydrolysates resulted in 4.3 g/L ethanol from 48 g/L xylose. Alkali pulping of wheat straw yielded a hemicellulose-rich fraction. Xylose was liberated by acid hydrolysis and fermentated by the yeast to produce 8.2 g/L ethanol from 47 g/L xylose in four days. 8 figures, 1 table.
