Pulses from a cw mode-locked Nd:YAG laser, spectrally broadened and chirped by self-phase modulation in a single-mode optical fiber, have been compressed in a multiple-stage amplifier system to a pulse width of 12 psec without a grating-pair delay line. Single pulses are amplified in pulsed Nd:YAG stages to energies greater than 10 mJ and are synchronous with the cw mode-locked laser source. We find the amplified pulses to be stable, free of satellite pulses, and close to the transform limit.
