The second quarterly report of the New Technology Program describes ebullated bench-scale, microautoclave and engineering studies of two-stage direct liquefaction of Illinois No. 6 (Burning Star Mine) coal. Described herein are: (1) Results of the first- and second-stage scoping runs on the bench-scale. (2) Microautoclave studies of two-stage thermal-catalytic versus catalytic conversion of Illinois No. 6 coal. (3) An examination of catalyst and hydrogenation mechanisms. (4) A study of the stability of recycle oils at batch distillation conditions. (5) An engineering analysis of the bench-scale data and a comparison with single-stage performance.
