[US Geological Survey research in radioactive waste disposal, fiscal year 1981:] Search for potential [disposal] sites
The objective is to locate and characterize rock masses at the NTS and in southern Nevada suitable as host media for high-level commercial radioactive wastes; to describe the areal and depth distribution and structural integrity of these rock masses; and to assess the potential for contaminant release by hydrologic transport or as a result of tectonic and (or) volcanic activity. From previous geologic work at NTS, the general geology is well known. Areas likely to have suitable host rocks and hydrologic conditions at depths appropriate for a repository are evaluated by detailed surface mapping, surface geophysical methods, exploratory drilling, and borehole geophysical techniques. Progress is reported in these areas. 10 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.
