Biochemical Removal of HAP Precursors from Coal.

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:600566
Column tests with Kentucky No. 9 coal were completed. As with Indiana and Pittsburgh coals, significant As, Cd, Co, Mn, and Ni were leached from Kentucky No. 9 coal by pyrite oxidizing bacteria. About 20% of Se was also removed. Additional test work done to determine if Hg was mobilized from coal indicated that hot ferric ion solutions would not mobilize Hg. Tests of microbial mobilization of Hg from cinnabar (HgS) also showed no evidence of mercury dissolution. The design of a pilot plant for the microbial removal of HAP precursors from coal was completed through the conceptual stage, including the operating parameters for heap and continuous vat leaching approaches. The INEEL slurry column reactor test work with Pittsburgh coal was completed. Product coal analysis indicated removal of half or more of Mn, Ni, As, Se, Co, Hg, and removal of over 40% of Cd, Pb, and F by the combined biological and physical processes.
