Effective chiral Lagrangian with baryons

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. D; (United States)
We use Ioffe's method of constructing (local) baryon field operators in terms of quarks to derive an effective chiral Lagrangian with U(3) x U(3) symmetry consisting of the J/sup P/ = (1/2)/sup +/ baryon octet, the J/sup P/ = (1/2)/sup -/ baryon nonet, and the pseudoscalar-meson nonet. This formalism leads to a set of generalized Goldberger-Treiman relations of the form F/sub ..pi../g/sub ..pi..//sub B>//sub +- /B/sub +- //sub =/approx.(M/sub +- /+M/sub +- /), F/sub ..pi../g/sub ..pi..//sub B>+/B/sub =/ approx.(M/sub +/-M/sub -/). We enumerate all nonvanishing three-point pseudoscalar-baryon couplings and use the g/sub ..pi..//sub B//sub >+/B/sub =/ couplings to study the decays B/sub -/..-->..B/sub +/..pi... We explain why the negative-parity isodoublet N(1535) decays predominantly into Neta, as opposed to N..pi.., even though relatively suppressed by phase space.
