This book is based on lectures and discussions of historians and physicists at the Second International Symposium of the History of Particle Physics, held in May, 1985 at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. Essays examine the period following the birth and infancy of particle physics (circa 1947-1963) when the field was establishing its own identity. Topics range from the politics of research funding to examinations of symmetry and axiomatic field theory. Major experiments and their theoretical explanations as well as the establishment of national research centers are also discussed. for academic and research collections treating particle physics and/or the history of science.
