Knowledge acquisition issues encountered during the development of an estimating expert system

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6002851
Artificial Intelligence, in particular expert systems methodologies, is being applied to the US Navy's automated data processing (ADP) project estimating tasks. Skilled Navy project leaders are nearing retirement and replacements may not possess the many years of experience required to make accurate estimating decisions of time, cost, equipment, and personnel needs. Knowledge acquisition has traditionally hindered the building of an expert system. A variety of information gathering techniques is discussed. Methods of interviewing, documenting, and verifying information are described. Project leaders were interviewed to capture their unique estimating expertise. Combining this information revealed fewer redundancies and contradictions than expected. The prototyping of the ADP-Estimator System is presented as part of the knowledge acquisition process.
