Nonlinear interaction of a Gaussian electromagnetic beam with an electrostatic ion-cyclotron wave: Brillouin scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)
This paper presents an investigation of the nonlinear interaction of a Gaussian electromagnetic (EM) beam with an electrostatic ion-cyclotron wave in a collisionless hot magnetoplasma. The EM beam is assumed to be propagating perpendicular to the static magnetic field in the ordinary mode. ON account of the Gaussian intensity distribution of the EM beam in a plane, transverse to the direction of propagation, a dc component of the ponderomotive force becomes finite and leads to the modification of the background electron and/or ion density. This leads to the coupling of the electrostatic ion-cylotron wave with the pump EM beam. This coupling is so important that it may lead to the focusing of the electrostatic ion-cylotron wave and under certain conditions may lead to Brillouin scattering of the EM beam.
