This paper shows how to significantly reduce computing time and cost by approximation of a total-field multiple-pattern development by a representative single pattern, which is exemplified by a five-spot case with 2 wells and a nine-spot case with 4 wells. Single-pattern simulation should be performed for the smallest symmetrical element (one-eighth) of the pattern to minimize computing cost. The paper describes a simple alteration necessary for identity of one-half or one-fourth pattern and one-eighth pattern results using the nine-point difference scheme with either parallel or diagonal grids.
