Making VAV more efficient and flexible

Journal Article · · Heating, Piping and Air Conditioning; (United States)

This article describes how to combine VAV and CAV air conditioning units in a parallel system to enhance efficiency and flexibility. Variable air volume (VAV) systems have been with us for many years. The essence of a VAV system is its ability to control the temperature of a space by varying the volume (cfm) of air supplied to that space rather than the supply air temperature, although supply air temperature may be reset when the space load is far below the system maximum. On the surface this may appear to be splitting hairs from an energy-use perspective. However, the fact is that a VAV system allows savings in energy use of up to 40 percent compared to a constant air volume, variable temperature system (CAV).
