Results of a study in which both the ring-closed and ring-opened forms of a radical cation have been characterized by ESR spectroscopy are reported. The 1,1,2,2-tetracyclopropane (TMCP) radical cation was found to be stable in the ring-closed form at 77/sup 0/K but rearranged to the ring-opened form at 110/sup 0/K in the CF/sub 2/ClCFCl/sub 2/ matrix. The cation generated by radiolysis consisted of 15 almost evenly spaced components with a superimposed fine structure on at least 11 of these lines.
