On the luminescence of ZrW{sub 2}O{sub 8}

The luminescence of the low-temperature phase of ZrW{sub 2}O{sub 8} is reported and discussed. The tetrahedral tungstate group exhibits a large Stokes shift and a low quenching temperature of luminescence. This is attributed to the localization of the charge transfer transitions within the short W{sup 6+}-O{sup 2{minus}} terminal bond of the [WO{sub 4}] tetrahedral group.
