The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) under the auspices of the US Department of Energy (DOE) National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) program is investigating welded tuff as an emplacement medium for a commercial high level waste repository. Geologic and hydrologic exploration is in progress in the southwest part of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) with focus on Yucca Mountain. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) have been assigned the responsibility to determine the suitability of tuff as an emplacement rock. This paper discusses the field experiment program portion of the suitability evaluation. 3 refs., 1 tab. (PLG)
