The nuclei /sup 147/Dy and /sup 199/Po have been obtained in the nuclear reactions /sup 113/Cd(/sup 40/Ar,6n) and /sup 164/Dy(/sup 40/Ar,5n). The charge states of the recoil atoms have been studied by means of a wide-range magnetic analyzer. It is found that the charge distributions of the recoil atoms do not agree with the theoretical ones, the average values of equilibrium charges being significantly greater than expected. Additional charge exchange of Dy and Po ions in a thin carbon foil (approx.45 ..mu..g/cm/sup 2/) at a time approx.10/sup -8/ sec after their emission from the target led to charge distributions of these ions in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical values. This difference in the charge distributions is explained by the presence in Dy and Po nuclei of strongly converted transitions with formation of vacancies in the inner electron shells of the atoms, filling of which leads to an increase of the charges of the emitted Dy and Po ions. The possiblity of formation of such vacancies as the result of atomic transitions is discussed.
