Correlation of second virial coefficients of polar gases by Redlich-Kwong equation of state

Journal Article · · A.I.Ch.E. J.; (United States)
Accounting for vapor-phase nonideality is essential in describing and accurately predicting phase equilibria at superatmospheric pressures; however, the original Redlich-Kwong equation, with only two constants, cannot give a very accurate representation for polar gases of the second virial coefficients involved in characterizing this nonideality. This study provides a reasonable method for making the best estimates of second virial coefficients, based on an extension of the RK equation's capability to correlate and predict the thermodynamic properties of polar substances using the optimal values of constants for each available isotherm. Extensive comparisons with other, more frequently used analytical methods having the same objective show this method to be superior.
