The present work discusses topics in the study of mullite phase equilibria and immiscibility; mullite crystal growth, crystalline and amorphous structures, and impurity distribution; mullite powder preparation, densification behavior, and mechanical properties; and mullite applications and process characterization methods. Attention is given to the alumina-silica phase diagram in the mullite region, mullite single-crystal growth and characterization, mullite powder from hydrothermal processing, the microstructures and properties of SiC whisker-reinforced mullite composites, and the superplastic flow of mullite-zirconia composites.
