A method is described for the determination of Cr/sup 3 +/ in blood serum by proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) after wet ashing and an extractive enrichment procedure. Wet ashing of 5 to 10 mL of human plasma is carried out with nitric, perchloric, and sulfuric acids. Chromium(VI) is complexed with ammonium pyrrolidinecarbodithioate-methyl isobutyl ketone (APCD-MIBK) at a pH of 2.4. After evaporation of the organic phase the metallic residue is dissolved in nitric and hyrochloric acids. A known volume of a 50 mg/L nickel solution is added as an internal standard and the solution reconcentrated. The few residual microliters are deposited on a polycarbonate foil. Recovery for this preconcentration step is measured with the use of carrier-free /sup 51/Cr. Satisfactory values are found for chromium in three NBS Standard Reference Materials. The detection limit of this analytical procedure is about 0.3 ng/mL. 9 references, 3 figures, 1 table.
