The mechanisms of surfactant-induced changes in the visible spectrometry of Be/sup 2 +/, Cu/sup 2 +/, and Al/sup 3 +/ complexes of Chrome Azurol S (CAS) were investigated. Increases in molar absorptivity and red shifts in the wavelength of maximum absorbance were observed for all three metals with a cationic surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB), and for Be/sup 2 +/ and Cu/sup 2 +/ complexes with a nonionic surfactant (Triton X-100, TX-100). Similar effects were noted with an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) in solutions of high ionic strength. Strictly micellar interactions were involved in the cases of TX-100 and SDS. Both ternary complex formation (involving surfactant monomers) and micellar interactions were observed with CTAB. Interactions with CTAB ranged from the formation of distinct complexes at low surfactant concentration to micellar interactions above the critical micelle concentration. Spectra of all surfactant sensitized systems were generally similar, suggesting similar local environments for the chromophores in ternary complexes and in micelles.
