Fuel reprocessing and waste management. Volume 1

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5998396
Spent commercial nuclear reactor fuel is not currently being reprocessed in the United States. But research and development activities are continuing, and there are very active programs under way to vitrify high-level liquid wastes at West Valley and Savannah River. Fuel is, however, being reprocessed in France and Japan, and several other countries are committed to reprocessing. Because of the progress and plans in several countries, a large international involvement in this meeting was essential. Through excellent cooperation by the European Nuclear Society, Canadian Nuclear Society, and the Atomic Energy Society of Japan, this goal was met. More than one-third of the attendees were from foreign countries, and 59 of the 90 papers presented were by authors from outside the United States. The technical program encompassed both invited and contributed papers on all aspects of reprocessing, including fuel storage, reprocessing, and waste handling, and also on storage or direct disposal instead of reprocessing. The large foreign involvement ensured that each aspect of the program was broadly represented.
