This paper discusses how the combination of environmental concerns resulting from CFC emissions, energy penalties from alternative refrigerants and an expanding global market will have a major impact on refrigeration and air-conditioning products and services during the next decade and beyond. These conflicting demands will force compromises as the private sector and governments work toward optimized solutions. To meet the accelerated schedules for phase-out of CFCs, equipment manufacturers and suppliers to the industry will be required to respond at an accelerated pace. New product designs will incorporate alternative working fluids and functional materials without the usual extensive laboratory and field test programs that assure product reliability and durability. In the long term, the changes imposed on the refrigeration and air-conditioning industries provide opportunities to introduce new technology; opportunities that are scarce for a mature, cost-competitive industry. New refrigerants, new functional materials, new designs and new cooling technologies are being developed in response to energy and environmental challenges. Producers and consumers alike will benefit from the infusion of new technology into this essential service to humanity.
