The objective of this research was to determine the effect of various concentrations of ozone on the concentration of nicotine on leaves of Nicotiana tabacum. The plants were fumigated for four hours with six, twelve, and twenty-four parts per hundred million of ozone and the effects of each concentration ascertained. The results indicated that: 1) the nicotine concentration increased by approximately 80% in a fully expanded leaf (leaf 6), in a 65-95% expanded leaf (leaf 9), and in a 50% expanded leaf (leaf 12) of Nicotiana tabacum L. var. Bel-W3 when fumigated with 24 pphm ozone for 4 hours; 2) there was not significant change in the nicotine concentration of the corresponding leaves of plants fumigated with 12 or with 6 pphm ozone for 4 hours under the same conditions; and 3) there was no apparent relationship between the amount of ozone-induced flecking of the upper surface of a Bel-W3 leaf and the changes in nicotine concentration. 13 figures, 4 tables.
