Testing performed in the Model Boiler No.2 (MB-2) facility located at the Westinghouse Engineering Test Facility in Tampa, Florida, provided valuable data for validating steam generator computer code analytical models. The MB-2 is scaled to represent a vertical tube model F steam generator, which is used in many commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR) plants. As described in Ref. 1, a major consideration in the MB-2 test rig design was to make it as prototypical as possible to the model F commercial PWR steam generator. Hence, to minimize uncertainties associated with scaling down, use was made of steam generator tubes of the same material, dimensions, and tube pitch as specified for model F. Prototypical primary and secondary temperatures, pressures, and mass velocities were also specified so that the performance of the model was directly applicable to the full-size unit wherever possible. The 7-m (23-ft)-high tube bundle, together with the primary moisture separator, provided a nearly prototypical driving head for the secondary circulation loop. Using prototypical fluid temperatures and hydraulic resistances in the tube bundle, tube support plates, primary swirl vane separator, and downcomer regions, it was possible to achieve a representative pressure drop distribution and secondary flow in the circulation loop. Sufficient detail as presented in Refs. 1 and 2 enabled computer code models to be developed. Results obtained using the FLASH (latest version of Ref. 3) transient safety analysis code were found to be in excellent agreement with the data.
