We report the use of intracavity absorption in a CW dye laser as a sensitive analytical method for the detection of iodine-129. With an external fluorescence detection scheme employing photon counting, quantitative isotope specific measurements of /sup 127/I/sub 2/ and /sup 129/I/sub 2/ have been made at concentrations in the range of 5 x 10/sup 11/ to 7 x 10/sup 15/ molecules/cm/sup 3/. Scaling estimates indicate that a lower level may be achieved if desirable. In addition, this method permits the simultaneous detection of a number of iodine isotopes.
