Radon testing of soils - this information should be included in soil survey reports

Here is a proposal to include radon information in soil survey reports. Because soil is a primary source of the radon that enters the home, the concentration of radon in soils should be determined and published. Total activity measurements have been widely used for years in making environmental radioactivity measurements because they are easy, quick, and cheap compared with analysis for specific radionuclides. The determination of a soil's gross alpha emission would require analysis by a laboratory equipped with a proportional counter and supplied with a few hundred milligrams of powdered soil sample. Data on the total alpha content of a soil could help determine which soils need further analysis for specific radionuclides.
