Method for suspending wells

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5991483

A method is described for shutting in a well which minimizes formation damage comprising: (a) placing into the formation a liquid solution sufficient to establish fluid flow into the formation which solution also minimizes fluid retention; (b) pumping a pumpable solidifiable gel mixture into the productive interval of a formation via a wellbore; (c) causing the gel mixture to become a solid thereby forming a gel plug within the wellbore and a formation gel within the formation sufficient to withstand environmental formation conditions and pressures which cause hydrocarbonaceous fluids to flow into the wellbore from the formation areas near the wellbore; (d) placing in the wellbore on top of the plug an amount of cement sufficient to isolate the productive interval when the cement hardens while being supported by the plug; and (e) allowing the cement to set which set cement in combination with the gel plug is competent to exclude production fluids from the wellbore.
