Determination of threshold and maximum operating electric stresses for selected high voltage insulations. Task II. Investigation of oil-filled paper insulated cables. Progress report No. 3. CTL-83-016

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5989878
This report covers investigations of threshold voltage of oil-impregnated paper insulated cables. Experimental work was done on model cables specially manufactured for this project. The cables were impregnated with mineral and with synthetic oils. Standard impulse breakdown voltage tests and impulse voltage breakdown tests with dc prestressing were performed at room temperature and at 100/sup 0/C. The most important result of this study is the finding of very high level of threshold voltage stress for oil-impregnated paper insulated cables. This threshold voltage is approximately 2.5 times higher than the threshold voltage of crosslinked polyethylene insulated cables.
