The authors investigate the formation of O/sup -//sub 2/ in the light reactions of the chromatophores of nonsulfur purple bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum and Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides using an ESR probe - tyron - and an absorption indicator - epinephrine. Using the data of inhibitor analysis, it is concluded that O/sup -//sub 2/ is formed in the autooxidation of the primary quinone of the reaction center (one-electron ubiquinone) and a low-potential semiquinone, formed in the oxidation of the bound quinone A /SUB z/ .
