A grip is described for tensile testing of ceramic specimens comprising: (a) an annular support housing defining a central cavity; (b) a multiplicity of hydraulic cylinder-piston assemblies equally spaced in a concentric circular array within the support housing about the central cavity; (c) a means for supplying pressurized oil to each of the hydraulic cylinder-pistons at the same oil pressure; and (d) a pull rod having a flanged end resting on the cylinder-piston assemblies and a gripper end for gripping the ceramic tensile specimen; the pull rod extending through the central cavity in the support housing.
