Great Lakes Regional Biomass Program. Quarterly report, September 1-November 30, 1984

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5986182
The objective of this program is to increase the utilization and production of biomass fuels by both the private and public sectors in the Great Lakes states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. During this quarter, the second draft of the Residential Wood Combustion Safety and Emissions guidebook was submitted. This guidebook outlines the safety and air pollution problems created by homeowners utilizing wood for spaceheating as well as policy options available at the state level to elevate the effects of wood burning. Biomass fuel specifications and combustion equipment fuel needs have been completed. This is the first step in the process to define the characteristics of solid biomass fuels typically used in industrial and commercial applications. The Landsat biomass resource assessment of Ohio has been completed. The assessment defines the standing biomass availability on a one square kilometer basis throughout the entire state. Major biomass categories included in this assessment include: dense hardwood, sparse hardwoods, coniferous, mixed forest, agricultural land and rangeland. The second draft of the Great Lakes Biomass Energy Directory was submitted. The directory lists installed biomass facilities in the region, state programs, legislation and university research related to biomass energy. A total of four first-year state grants and three first-year subcontracts were closed-out this quarter. It is anticipated that all first-year state grants and all but one of the first-year subcontracts will be closed out during the next quarter (December 1984-February 1985). Three new subcontractors were selected this quarter.
