New look at thermal insulation for noise reduction

Conference · · Proc. - Int. Conf. Noise Control Eng.; (United States)

Although mineral wool insulation is recognized to offer better acoustical performance, calcium silicate insulation, with historically better thermal and structural performance, has been the standard in the power industry. However, over the last 10 years, changes in the manufacture of mineral wool insulation have made it a viable alternative to calcium silicate. A recent study of both materials indicated that use of mineral wool insulation rather than calcium silicate would result in reduced plant insulation heat losses at a lower cost for the insulating system while providing lower in-plant sound levels.
