Phillips steel platform to set UK precedent
Phillips Petroleum will begin developing its Maureen discovery this year and by using early production techniques expects production startup in late 1981 or early 1982. The first of 12 scheduled production wells will be drilled this year from a semisubmersible rig through a 24-slot subsea template. The drilling of the production wells and 7 planned water-injection wells will continue while the platform is under construction. Phillips is aiming to have all the wells drilled before the platform is installed and estimates that initial average production will be around 75,000 bpd. Phillips, in its first UK sector oil-field development, will be breaking new ground in North Sea platform design. Development plans call for a steel gravity platform with integral oil storage. Designed by Tecnomare of Italy, the platform will be a triangular-base steel gravity structure with 3 cylindrical steel tanks which will act as ballast as well as providing storage for up to 650,000 bbl of oil.
