Back injuries account for almost one quarter of all underground mine injuries. A review of causes of back injuries revealed that lifting, twisting and slipping were the most common, usually as a result of handling general supplies, timbers and cables. The information indicates that steps need to be taken to prevent materials handling accidents. The article describes studies on avoidance of back injuries, including the screening and placement of miners in appropriate jobs, methods of lifting to reduce strain on the back, training of personnel in lifting techniques, and redesigning of jobs to reduce manual lifting tasks. 11 references.
