Speed avoidance logic for a variable speed wind turbine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5984137

A critical speed avoidance method is described or use in controlling the speed of variable speed wind turbine generator, comprising the steps of: sensing the generator output power, generator speed and turbine speed and providing sensed generator power, generator speed and turbine speed signals indicative of the magnitude thereof; controlling the generator torque in response to the sensed signals by providing a generator speed command signal for maneuvering the generator speed as a function of sensed power; changing the magnitude of the generator speed command signal between selected generator output power signal magnitudes at a rate faster or slower than indicated by the function to a transition point between the selected generator power signal magnitudes at which power is available to provide a rapid change in generator speed; and providing, at the transition point a discontinuity in the magnitude of the generator speed command signal for inducing a rapid generator speed change through the critical speed.
